Edward Steichen (American, 1879–1973)
Edward Steichen was a revolutionary force in photography, evolving from a leading Pictorialist to a pioneer of sharp-focus commercial and fashion imagery. As the first director of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, he curated the landmark Family of Man exhibition and helped elevate photography to the status of fine art. Throughout his long career, his work was defined by a constant pursuit of innovation, capturing the spirit of the early 20th century with unparalleled elegance.

George Tice (American, 1938–2025)
A master of the silver gelatin process, George Tice was a titan of 20th-century black-and-white photography known for his meticulous depictions of American life and landscapes. While his own work—most notably Paterson and his studies of the Amish—defined him as a premier chronicler of the urban Northeast, Tice was also revered as one of the world’s finest master printers. His technical brilliance led to a historic collaboration with the estate of Edward Steichen, where Tice was entrusted with the rare permission to create definitive prints directly from Steichen’s original glass-plate negatives. This unique bridge between generations allowed Tice to preserve the tonal richness of the past while cementing his own legacy as a guardian of photographic craft.
