Victor Casnelli (also spelled Casenelli) was born in New York City of Genoese parents. He lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, from the mid-1880s until 1905, when he and his wife moved to Muskegon, Michigan. For many years Casnelli had a studio at the Pike’s Opera House in Cincinnati. The artist lost all of his early work when the building burned in 1903. While in Cincinnati, Casnelli supported himself painting backdrops for theaters and creating murals in private homes. The artist was especially proud to have painted murals in the home of former President William Howard Taft. Under the influence of John Hauser, Joseph Henry Sharp and Henry Farny, Casnelli began to specialize in American Indigenous portraits and scenes. He also was well known for his Venetian and Orientalist paintings. In Muskegon, Casnelli painted works for municipal buildings and many businesses, including a series of 17 paintings depicting the city’s history for the National Lumberman’s Bank. The artist spelled his name two ways. While in Cincinnati, he used ‘Casnelli.’ After his move to Muskegon, he signed his work ‘Casenelli.’
