Karpen Sack-Back Windsor Style Armchair with Inset Rush Seat, Early 20th Century

Item Details

This early 20th-century Colonial Revival armchair by S. Karpen & Bros. features a classic sack-back Windsor silhouette. Constructed from resilient mixed hardwoods, the chair is designed with a steam-bent double bow back and finely turned spindles. A distinctive feature of this model is the saddle-carved wooden seat which incorporates an inset panel of woven fiber rush, providing a textural contrast to the dark-stained frame. The chair stands on baluster-turned legs joined by a traditional H-stretcher. Authenticity is confirmed by the original Karpen metal manufacturer’s plate and a partial paper label remaining on the underside. This piece represents the high-quality craftsmanship of one of Chicago’s most prominent historical furniture makers during the peak of the American Colonial Revival movement.
