Hitchcock Style Stenciled-Decorated "Fancy" and Victorian Oval-Back Side Chairs
Item Details
This lot includes two distinct 19th-century American side chairs in ebonized finishes. The first is a Victorian-era chair featuring a sophisticated oval back with a central recessed medallion splat, ebonized wood, and turned baluster legs over a woven rush seat. The second is a Federal-style Hitchcock side chair, showcasing characteristic bronze-powder stenciling of a cornucopia on the top slat and secondary floral motifs on the stiles. It features a woven splint seat and tapered legs. Both chairs exhibit a weathered, authentic patina and represent the transition from high-style Victorian seating to the functional, decorative ‘fancy’ furniture of the mid-19th century.
