English Elm Windsor Sack-Back Armchair with Pierced Splat, 19th Century
Item Details
This 19th-century English Windsor armchair is a robust example of provincial craftsmanship. Known as a ‘Sack-Back’ or ‘Hoop-Back’ design, it features a characteristic steam-bent crest rail enclosing a combination of narrow spindles and a central decorative pierced splat. The armchair is built with a thick, contoured elm saddle seat supported by turned legs and a traditional H-stretcher. The dark, honey-toned finish highlights the varied grain of the mixed hardwoods used in its construction. This piece exhibits the classic proportions and functional elegance associated with traditional British country furniture.
