Qing Dynasty Chinese Elm Alter Table
Item Details
This monumental Chinese altar table, or qiaotou’an, is a classic example of late Qing Dynasty provincial furniture. Constructed from solid elm wood (yumu), the table features a long, single-plank top terminating in elegantly recurved flanges. The apron is supported by intricate openwork spandrels featuring traditional scrolling motifs. The trestle-style legs are detailed with vertical ruyi-patterned piercings and rest on heavy base stretchers. The piece retains an original dark lacquer finish that has developed a rich, varied patina through generations of use. Its dramatic length and architectural silhouette make it a versatile focal point for contemporary interiors.
