Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995) was a premier Japanese printmaker and painter born into an illustrious artistic dynasty in Tokyo. The eldest son of the legendary Shin-hanga master Hiroshi Yoshida and artist Fujio Yoshida, Toshi began drawing at age three and was raised in an environment where art was central to daily life.
Inheriting his father’s cosmopolitan worldview, Toshi embarked on a grueling sketching trip through India and Southeast Asia at age nineteen. This trip sparked a lifelong passion for global travel that eventually took him to China, Korea, Europe, Antarctica, and the Americas. An avid mountaineer, he captured the world’s landscapes and wildlife in striking woodblock prints. While heavily influenced by his father, Toshi forged a distinct style defined by bold colors and large, simplified shapes. Following Hiroshi’s death in 1950, he safely explored abstract art for several years before ultimately returning to the refined realism that defined his later career.
Beyond his personal work, Toshi was a dedicated cultural ambassador who exhibited and lectured internationally. In 1980, he founded a printmaking school in Nagano Prefecture, mentoring a new generation of notable international artists. He continued to create and teach until his passing in 1995.
