Victorian Renaissance Revival Carved Walnut Armchair, Attributed to John Jelliff
Item Details
This authentic 19th-century Victorian armchair is a distinguished example of the Renaissance Revival style, dating to approximately 1860–1880. The walnut frame features a high-arched crest rail centered by a vigorous, high-relief carving of a classical female masque, flanked by scrolling foliate motifs. The tall back is upholstered in a creamy white textile with elegant button tufting. Padded scrolling arms lead to a deep seat, supported by a carved apron and sturdy turned front legs with decorative block joinery. The chair retains its original white porcelain casters on the front feet, a definitive indicator of mid-to-late Victorian manufacture. The frame exhibits the soft, hand-finished edges and rich patina expected of a legitimate period antique.
