Japanese Hand-Painted Four-Panel Byōbu Screen, 20th Century

Item Details

This four-panel Japanese byōbu screen is executed in ink and light pigments on a rich gold leaf ground. The composition depicts a tranquil river landscape transitioning through mountain peaks, featuring traditional motifs including a tiered pagoda and a solitary fisherman. Utilizing the classical ‘sumi-e’ technique, the artist has employed the gold leaf as a luminous mist to define depth and negative space. The screen is finished with a traditional silk brocade border and a black lacquered frame, representative of mid-Shōwa era craftsmanship.
