American Empire Revival Cherry Library Table, Late 19th/Early 20th Century

Item Details

This American library table is a robust example of the Empire Revival style, commonly referred to as ‘Centennial’ furniture. Crafted from solid cherry with a secondary wood of white pine, the desk features a spacious rectangular top above a deep frieze containing a single functional drawer. The drawer is fitted with an elegant circular brass pull and displays hand-cut dovetail joinery that has been historically reinforced with early wire nails—a hallmark of late 19th-century construction. The architectural trestle base is defined by two heavy, shaped supports accented with centered, machine-turned bosses and joined by a sturdy flat stretcher. The table terminates in classically inspired scrolled bracket feet. This piece represents the late-Victorian era’s fascination with earlier American Classical forms, offering a blend of 1840s aesthetics with the improved structural stability of turn-of-the-century manufacturing.
