Victorian Style Painted Domed Top Steamer Trunk, Late 19th Century
Item Details
This late 19th-century Victorian steamer trunk features a classic domed ‘camel-back’ lid and a robust wooden-slat construction. The exterior is reinforced with elaborate cast metal hardware, including foliate-motif corner guards and strap terminations. The trunk is currently finished in a later-applied decorative polychrome paint scheme of cream with sage-green accents on the slats and red-brown on the horizontal band. It retains its central hasp and dual side latches, along with thick leather carrying handles, though the handle on the right side is severed. The interior has been painted white, providing a clean surface for modern storage but removing the original lithographed paper labels typically found in pieces of this age. This trunk serves as a charming primitive storage solution or coffee table alternative, showcasing a blend of industrial-era hardware and folk-style decoration.
