Art Nouveau Mahogany Inlaid Shield-Back Armchair with Bargello Needlepoint Seat

Item Details

This early 20th-century armchair is an elegant example of Art Nouveau cabinetmaking, characterized by its mahogany frame and delicate shield-back design. The central splat is adorned with a sophisticated marquetry panel featuring fruitwood inlays in a stylized floral motif, a hallmark of the Edwardian era’s refined craftsmanship. The chair’s silhouette is defined by gracefully sweeping arms that exhibit the ‘whiplash’ curves associated with the Art Nouveau aesthetic, transitioning into square-tapered rear legs and out-swept front legs supported by original small-diameter brass casters. The seat is currently upholstered in a textured geometric needlepoint fabric. While the chair retains its structural integrity and intricate decorative inlays, the mahogany finish and upholstery show honest wear consistent with over a century of use as a functional library or desk chair.
