Chippendale Style Upholstered Wingback Armchair

Item Details

This 19th-century wingback armchair is a fine example of Chippendale Style craftsmanship.he mahogany frame features a high camel back, deep scrolled wings, and rolled arms, all resting on square tapered legs. The front legs are fitted with functional metal casters. A critical indicator of its antique period is the H-form stretcher, which utilizes traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery rather than modern dowels or screws. The underside of the chair rail displays the ‘reassuring sign’ of multiple generations of nail holes and oxidized forged nails, confirming it has been reupholstered several times over at least a century. Currently, the chair is finished in a high-quality damask-patterned textile with tan and navy blue foliate motifs. This piece successfully balances period structural integrity with a refreshed decorative surface.
