Victorian Style Oak and Caned Sewing Rocker, Early 20th Century
Item Details
This early 20th-century rocking chair is a fine example of American transitional furniture, blending Victorian ornamental details with the sturdy utility of the Edwardian era. Constructed from solid oak, the chair features a high, slightly raked back and a contoured seat, both inset with traditional octagonal-weave natural cane. The most distinctive feature is the pair of low-profile, scrolled open armrests that provide support without restricting movement. The undercarriage is reinforced with a multi-spindle stretcher system, highlighted by a decorative bobbin-turned front rail and turned front posts. The underside reveals authentic period construction, with the cane hand-laced through the frame rather than utilizing modern spline-and-groove methods.
