Anglo-Indian Carved Hardwood Burgomaster Chair, Mid to Late 20th Century
Item Details
This Burgomaster chair, a classic form of Dutch Colonial inspiration, is crafted from a dense, dark-grained hardwood, likely teak. The chair features a distinctive semi-circular backrest with a raised central crest rail and three intricately pierced splats carved with interlaced Celtic-style knots. The circular seat is fitted with hand-woven cane, providing a lightweight and breathable surface characteristic of tropical furniture. Supported by a unique six-leg arrangement, the three forward legs are elaborately turned with baluster and ring details, while the rear legs are squared and gently raked for stability. The arms follow the curve of the backrest, terminating in outward-scrolled grips. This piece serves as a striking example of Anglo-Indian decorative arts, combining European seating silhouettes with regional timber and carving traditions.
