Gilt and Vernis Martin Style Illuminated Vitrine, Mid-20th Century
Item Details
This Louis XV style vitrine cabinet features a classic bombe silhouette finished in an antiqued gold gilt. The upper section is enclosed by three serpentine-front glass panels, opening to a mirrored interior with adjustable glass shelving. The lower section is adorned with three hand-painted panels in the ‘Vernis Martin’ tradition, with the central panel illustrating a romanticized 18th-century courting scene in a woodland setting. The cabinet is accented with cast brass ormolu mounts along the edges and sits on slender cabriole legs terminating in brass sabots. Equipped with an integrated interior lighting system, this piece exemplifies the mid-century European interest in reviving ornate Rococo decorative arts for the modern interior.
