2'9 x 4'11 Hand-Knotted Afghan Baluch Prayer Rug

Item Details

This hand-knotted Afghan Baluch prayer rug is a quintessential representation of the tribal weaving traditions of Western Afghanistan. The rug is defined by its directional ‘Mihrab’ or prayer niche, intended to be oriented toward Mecca during use. At the head of the niche, three distinct architectural motifs—reminiscent of mosque minarets—are woven in ivory. The central field is a deep, saturated oxblood red, typical of the Baluch aesthetic, and is framed by a complex series of geometric borders featuring repeating tribal symbols and latch-hook patterns in navy and terracotta. Hand-knotted with high-quality, hand-spun wool, the rug displays a dense, low pile and is finished with traditional flat-woven kilim aprons at both ends. Its somber, rich colorway and portable ‘prayer size’ make it a versatile piece for both spiritual use and decorative wall display.
