Set of Five Adams Style Mahogany Chairs with Needlepoint Seats
Item Details
This set of five mahogany armchairs is executed in the Neoclassical ‘Adams’ style, popular in the early 20th century. The chairs feature distinctive shield-shaped backs with intricate pierced splats incorporating stylized foliate and plume designs. The frame is further detailed with out-swept arms supported by turned balusters and front legs anchored by square corner blocks carved with central stars. Each chair features a circular seat upholstered in hand-worked needlepoint with various floral bouquet motifs, finished with brass nailhead trim. While the mahogany frames retain their elegant silhouettes, the set requires maintenance to the under-seat jute webbing, which is currently sagging and detached on several units. A vintage label for ’Hode’s Upholstery Specialists’ of Cincinnati, Ohio, suggests a history of professional care in the mid-to-late 20th century.
