This hand-knotted wool rug originates from the Baluch tribal weavers of Western Afghanistan. The design is anchored by a vertical ‘Tree of Life’ composition set within a charcoal-brown field, featuring angular, serrated branches rendered in a deep madder red. The central field is enclosed by a sophisticated series of borders, notably a cream-colored band decorated with alternating polychrome geometric blossoms and a classic reciprocating ‘running dog’ guard band. Woven entirely with wool, including the foundation, this rug possesses the supple, ‘floppy’ handle characteristic of nomadic tribal textiles. The ends are finished with elaborate hand-braided tassels, reflecting the artisanal care typical of mid-century Baluch production. Its earthy palette and archaic geometric language make it a highly versatile piece for traditional or transitional interiors.
