African Ashanti Hand-Carved Wood Stool, 20th Century
Item Details
This authentic Ashanti stool is hand-carved from a single solid block of light-toned West African hardwood. A classic example of Ghanaian monoxyle furniture, it features the iconic deeply curved crescent seat designed for ergonomic comfort and ceremonial importance. The seat is supported by an architectural arrangement consisting of a central rectangular pillar with intricate geometric openwork carvings, flanked by two sturdy cylindrical supports with scalloped detailing. Grounded on a flat rectangular plinth, the stool displays a well-aged surface patina that highlights the hand-tooling marks of the artisan. Traditionally used as personal or status-based seating in West Africa, this piece serves as both a functional object and a significant work of tribal sculpture.
