Antique Jacobean Carved Oak Blanket Chest, 17th Century

Item Details

This 17th-century carved oak joined chest features a traditional four-panel facade, each panel deeply incised with a central lozenge and stylized solar whirl motifs. The stiles and rails are decorated with continuous carved guilloche and lunette patterns, characteristic of the Jacobean period. The chest is constructed with pegged mortise and tenon joinery, standing on extended stiles that form the feet. A heavy wrought iron lock plate is surface-mounted to the center rail, though it shows evidence of being a later modification. The planked oak top exhibits a natural aged patina with significant bowing and historical wear consistent with over 300 years of use.
