French Louis XVI Style Giltwood and Caned Canapé à Oreilles Settee, Late 19th C.

A Louis XVI style giltwood settee featuring a three-sided caned back and sides with a rectangular caned seat. The frame is decorated with carved twist-fluted pilasters topped with square rosetted blocks. The seat rail is embellished with a continuous beaded and ovoid molded trim, supported by four tapered and fluted legs with acanthus leaf carvings at the knees. The piece retains a distressed gilded finish over a red bole base. Includes a custom loose damask upholstered seat cushion with corded trim.

- wooden frame shows significant wear to the gilding (boling visible) and minor structural chips; caning is severely compromised, with large punctures and losses to the seat and significant breaks/tears in the back and side panels; requires professional re-caning; underside reveals a later-added plywood foundation panel; cushion shows light age-related wear.
