Pablo Picasso “Visage” Pitcher, 1955


A pioneer of Modern art, Pablo Picasso mastered the fundamentals of color to express emotion and his notable Cubist and Surrealist works display his understanding of form. This white earthenware pitcher features a tall, tapered form and a wide spout, decorated in black and terra-cotta engobes and is partially glazed. The pitcher presents a Cubist-style face on the body and a wavy abstract motif on the reverse.

A Chanel Boutique long-sleeve, collarless mini dress/jacket in ivory velvet with a silk lining from the fall 1993 collection by Karl Lagerfeld. The dress is designed with a fitted bodice and a skirt with a series of vertical pleats at the back and sides creating a flared silhouette. The front has four functional pockets with gold braided trim and gold-tone CC logo buttons down the front and at the sleeves.

Northern Qi Dynasty Buddha Head Limestone Sculpture, 6th Century


Chinese School, Limestone Buddha head, Northern Qi Dynasty (550–577). The head features a serene, closed-eye expression, full lips, and the characteristic tight, snail-shell curls (ushnisha) over the cranium. The sculpture is mounted on a modern black base.

German-born artist Gustave Baumann was a leading printmaker, reviving the color woodcut technique in the United States. From the former collection of Ella Fitzgerald, a legendary jazz singer, known as the “First Lady of Song,” who became one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century. This Hermès Kelly Sellier was purchased at Whittier Drive, Los Angeles, California (Home of Ella Fitzgerald); acquired via New Orleans Auction Galleries (2011), Private Collection.
