Sapphires are the gem of wisdom, loyalty and nobility. Said to focus the mind, increase self-discipline and channel higher powers, sapphires have a long history of being worn by different cultures for spiritual purposes. The name “sapphire” comes from the Greek word sappheiros meaning “blue stone”. Greeks wore sapphires for guidance while seeking answers from the oracle. Buddhists believed sapphires encouraged spiritual enlightenment and early Christian kings wore sapphires in ecclesiastical rings for their supposed powers of protection. Second only to diamonds in hardness, sapphires come in a variety of brilliant shades excepting red (which are classified as rubies).
