Born in Philadelphia, Joseph Pennell received training at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art. Although he is recognized as a lithographer, illustrator, painter, and teacher, he is considered one of the renowned American artists of the etching revival period. He is particularly known for his etchings of various subjects such as monuments, landscapes, cityscapes, factories, and documentary series. It is believed that Pennell was a member of the New York Etchers Club and was one of the founders of the Philadelphia Society of Etchers. As a close friend of James Abbott McNeill Whistler, he was very influenced by the famed artist and, with his wife, co-authored a biography about Whistler published in 1908. Pennell taught at the Art Students League of New York and Slade School of Art. He was elected a member of the National Academy in 1907 and an Academician in 1909.
