An early, substantial mural-sized oil painting on canvas by very well-listed American artist Joseph Marioni (New York/Ohio; born 1943). This modernist work is painted on five separate unstretched canvas panels, and features both vertical and diagonal bands of color that interact to create a playful, layered and dynamic composition. This work is unsigned.
Joseph Marioni was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1943 and educated at The Cincinnati Art Academy and the San Francisco Art Institute. He moved to New York in 1972, where he established himself as a noted modernist painter, who has been alternately classified as a high modernist, monochrome painter, and minimalist. He rejects these labels, referring to his own process as ‘radical painting’, alluding to the paring of abstraction down to the non-objective, to it’s most sensational, in the truest sense of the word, aspect – light, as embodied in pigment. Eliminating all other considerations allows the viewer to have a true visual experience, the ultimate goal. Marioni’s work is widely held in private collections across the globe, and resides in the collections of many prominent institutions, including: The Whitney Museum of Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Contemporary Art, California; Museum of Modern Art, Vienna, Austria; Fonds National d’art Contemporain, Paris; Cincinnati Art Museum, Ohio; Basel Kunstmuseum, Switzerland; Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland, and many more.
This painting was donated by a private collector to the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and then deaccessioned. Proceeds to benefit future student programs. Founded in 1869, The Art Academy of Cincinnati is celebrating their 150th anniversary this year through the sale of limited works in the Collection.

- a 4" tear is visible to the upper left edge of the fourth canvas panel.

- measured in five boxes rolled for shipping. Total image area measures 203" W x 120" H (17’ W x 10’ H). Panel one measures 29" W x 120" H, panel two measures 43" W x 120" H, panel three measures 50" W x 120" H, panel four measures 49" W x 120" H, and panel five measures 32" W x 120" H.
