Italian Stockinette Fisherman with Portuguese Style Papier-Mâché Shepherd

A pair of mid-century handcrafted international costume dolls. Featured is a stockinette fisherman with blond wool hair, knitted beret, scarf, striped shirt, khakis, and wooden clogs. His hands and face are wrapped in nylon, with a hand-painted smiling face, while he holds a basket, fishing net, and pipe. ‘Made in Italy’ is stamped to the underside of one clog. Also offered is a Portuguese inspired papier-mâché shepherd with a hand-painted face, standing guard with staff in hand. He is wearing a felt hat, linen shirt, buttoned vest and watch chain, shorts, knit socks, leather top shoes, and kept warm by a sheepskin cape. A maker’s mark was not visible.
