Despite being born and raised in New York City, American illustrator Norman Rockwell is beloved for his portrayals of idealized rural American life. He studied art at the National Academy of Design, but soon left to pursue training geared more towards illustration at the Art Students League. There he was introduced to the work of Howard Pyle, whose style and themes were a lifelong influence on Rockwell’s work. Soon after establishing a studio in New Rochelle, New York with fellow artist Clyde Forsythe, Rockwell sold his first illustration to the ‘Saturday Evening Post’, beginning a four decade relationship during which he produced 322 covers for the magazine, propelling him into the national spotlight.
