A 1987 oil painting on canvas titled Green Blue Hymn by listed American artist John Cleaveland (b 1963). Portrayed in a non-objective, minimalist style, this work features a large field of layered textural drips and splatters of pigment comprising an expansive gray abyss. The work is signed, titled, and dated to the verso.
John Cleaveland received his BFA from the University of Georgia and continued his education on a study abroad program in Cortona, Italy. Although he is particularly known for his expansive photo-realistic landscapes, he created abstract paintings before studying in Italy. His work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Albany Museum of Art, the Morris Museum of Art, and the Madison Cultural Center in Georgia, among others.
