Wrought Iron "Sticking Tommy" Candle Holders Including One Marked Nathan Varney
Item Details
A selection of miner’s antique candle holders, one marked ‘Varney’. Nathan Varney made ‘sticking tommys’ from 1885-1899 in Denver, Colorado. These candle holders are made of hand-wrought iron, with a handle, a hook, and a ring to hold a candle. Miner’s candles were tapers, cut to a specific length. The candle holder had both a spike in front, used to stick into the side of a timber of any suitable crack in the mine wall, and a hook, allowing the miner to adapt it to hold it or attach it to his hat wherever he was working. Also in this group is a candle suffer featuring a lion finial, a meat tenderizer, a ladle and two skeleton keys.
