Richard Dey de Ribkowsky was born in Rustchuk, Bulgaria. He began his artistic studies in Paris, France at the age of 13 before travelling to Italy and Russia. Ribkowsky continued to travel for the majority of his life and eventually settled in California in his old age. He became known for his marine landscapes, though he never limited himself to them, and even founded the Academy of Beaux Arts in Buenos Aires in 1904.
