Klingenthal Carl Schneider 4/4 Spruce and Maple Violin with Conrad Götz Bow

A full size maple and spruce violin including a Conrad Götz bow and carrying case. The instrument bears a pulp wood paper label reading, ‘Carl Schneider, Violin, macher in Klingenthal. 1777.’ The label is mostly printed with ‘1777’ written by hand in black ink. The violin features a slab cut maple back. The scroll is likely original to the violin, grafted to a longer, more modern neck more suitable for meeting the demands of musical stylings beginning in the Romantic period. The violin is accompanied by a certificate from Lyon & Healy, dated 1944, authenticating its age and origin, assigned reference number 8751. The listing also includes an early twentieth century violin bow stamped ‘Conrad Götz’ to the stick, engraved ‘Götz’ to the fully-lined frog, and stamped ‘Germany’ to the underside of the stick, partially-worn. A carrying case with vinyl exterior and red fabric interior is provided.

Condition
- marks and nicks throughout, open seams to lower bout and to corners, some finish loss, dust accumulation, nicks along edges, bow needs to be restrung, extra A string included.
- previous repairs to instrument, including re-glued cracks to the face.
- scroll graft or splice visible, indicating the neck is potentially not original to the violin.
- residue to reverse of the instrument, exposed wood to the edges, purfling is shifting out of place and maple is not sitting flush with the ebony.
