One of an edition of three and one artist proof

A sculptural bench designed by renowned architect Bernard Tschumi, titled Typogram. This ambiguously designed work was digitally created and constructed of Formica® material. The elegant shape bends and curves to create a variety of lounging positions. Its openings provide storage space.

Privately commissioned and displayed in the FORM: Contemporary Architects at Play exhibition at the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center in 2008, the bench was designed by Tschumi with the assistance of Nefeli Chatzimina and Kim Starr. Fabrication was provided by Art Woodworking & Mfg., Co., Switzerland. The work was created in celebration and honor of Jay Chatterjee’s architectural contributions to Cincinnati.

Bernard Tschumi is an architect, educator, and writer, known for his deconstructivist works. He received his degree in architecture at ETH in Zurich. As an educator, Tschumi has taught at the Architectural Association in London, Columbia University, Cooper Union in New York, the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in New York, and Princeton University. As a theorist and academic, Tschumi’s works seek to evaluate the role between architecture and the political and personal freedoms of a building’s inhabitants. His notable architectural works include the the Parc de la Villette in Paris, France; the Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece; and the Alésia MuséoParc in Burgundy, France.
