The work is inscribed, signed, and dated to the verso: ‘Terriers Dogs Rotting / Painted By J.C. Rodgers / 1863’. It is presented in a gesso and wood frame with a canvas liner and gold-tone fillet.

- faint scratch marks throughout; minor paint loss scattered throughout; minor wear scattered throughout frame.
