A rare war-date autograph letter signed by Samuel Wheelock Fiske to Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War. The letter was penned one month prior to Fiske’s death of injuries sustained in Battle of the Wilderness. The contents of the letter show an earnest appeal recoup wages withheld from Fiske with alternative option to tender his resignation with honorable discharge. Rev. Samuel Wheelock Fiske (1828–1864) wrote of his military experiences and travels throughout Asia and Europe under the pen name ‘Dunn Browne’. During his military career Fiske was a prisoner of war and fought several battles with the Army of The Potomac, including the Battle of Gettysburg. 14th Connecticut Infantry Camp, April 30, 1864.
