Born in Irwin, Ohio, James Roy Hopkins studied at the Columbus School of Art and the Cincinnati Art Academy with Frank Duveneck. Shortly after, in 1900, he moved to New York City where he worked an illustrator for medical textbooks. Two years later, Hopkins moved to Paris and studied at the Académie Colarossi. Acquaintances with Impressionists such as Pierre August Renoir, Claude Monet, and Edgar Degas inspired his stylistic shift to an emphasis on light and looser brushwork. Upon returning to Cincinnati, he taught at the Cincinnati Art Academy, where he was appointed as the head of the school after Duveneck’s death. Hopkins’ work has been exhibtied and collected by multiple institutions including the Columbus Museum of Art, the Springfield Museum of Art, and the Mary Ran Gallery, among others.
