An oil painting on canvas fully titled National Turnfest Competition – Cincinnati, OH by well-listed Cincinnati-born artist Louis Charles Vogt (1864 – 1939), dated 1909. This work features one of the processional events of the the historic quadrennial Cincinnati Turnfest that took place in June, 1909. With former President William Howard Taft pictured to the lower left in a carriage, the overall composition features a spectacle of visitors and government officials gathered in Government Square in front of the Stadium, located on the corner of East 5th Street and Walnut Street. Signed ‘L.C. Vogt’ to the lower right, the paint is presented in a gold-leaf gesso Lowy frame. The engraved Lowy mark is present to the lower center of the frame verso. An inscription to the canvas verso reads ‘James F. Dailey’. A business card from Collector’s Art Group is also adhered to the verso. This painting was included in the Cincinnati Art Galleries exhibition Panorama of Cincinnati Art XXVIII.

The event pictured took place only months after William Howard Taft was inaugurated as President of the United States in 1909. The National Turnfest was a quadriennial festival organized by the American Turners, an organization founded in Cincinnati by German immigrants in 1848. Nearly 50,000 people, both nationally and internationally, attended the Olympiad event depicted in this painting.

Louis Charles Vogt studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy with Frank Duveneck and Charles Meurer. He continued his studies with Henry Siddons Mowbray in New York City. While maintaining a stuidio in Cincinnati, Vogt traveled as an illustrator for Harper’s and Century magazines. During his life, the artist exhibited his work at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, the Boston Art Club, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, among other institutions.

- spots of accretion and stains scattered throughout, especially visible in central area of canvas; rubbing and paint loss along edges; craquelure throughout painting; color fading throughout; some wear in frame includes small chips, stains, scratches, and finish loss scattered throughout.
