An oil painting on canvas titled Stately Couple with Stall by listed artist John Lewis Brown (1829 – 1890), created in 1860. This work features a finely dressed elite couple among horses in a stable. The work is faintly signed and dated to the lower right. It is presented in a gesso and wood frame with a faux grain finish. A descriptive label to the verso provides information about the work including the artist and title. A label from Cross Gate Gallery is also adhered to the verso.

Born to a Scottish family, John Lewis Brown studied at the École des Beaux-Arts with Camille Roqueplan and Jean-Hillaire Belloc. He is especially known for his paintings of horses, dogs, hunting, and military scenes. Among his notable paintings are scenes of the American Revolutionary War, the Seven Years’ War, and the 1870 Franco-Prussian War.

- painting has been heavily restored, cut and relined; in painting throughout; five vertical creases throughout canvas; paint chipping present to upper and lower left; small spots of paint loss scattered throughout; some bubbling scattered throughout; stains, scratches and abrasions scattered throughout; creases present along edges and corners of painting; minor wear scattered throughout frame; foam core affixed to verso of frame.
