Item Details

Harry Gottlieb (Romanian-American; 1895 – 1993)
Untitled
Gouache and watercolor on paper
Signed to lower right

A gouache and watercolor painting on paper by well-listed Romanian-American artist Harry Gottlieb (1895 – 1993). Portrayed gestural brushstrokes and vibrant colors, this loosely-rendered work features a group of cotton harvesters in a field. Signed to the lower right, it is presented under glass with beige matting and housed in a beveled gold-tone wood frame.

Considered of the first American Social Realist artists and a pioneer of silk-screening, Harry Gottlieb was a painter, screenprinter, and lithographer. He was born in Romania and emigrated to the U.S. in 1907, settling in Minneapolis with his family. The artist studied at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and later at the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts and National Academy of Design. While employed by the Works Progress Administration, he learned the process of screen-printing, and became one of the first members of the WPA/FAP’s Silk Screen Unit.
