Watercolor on paper
Signed to lower left
A late 19th century watercolor portrait painting by very well-listed artist Maynard Dixon (California/Arizona; 1875 – 1946). This finely rendered painting depicts a rugged cowboy with a stoic expression, posed in three-quarter view against a tonal blue background that suggests the immense space of the Western landscape. This work is signed to the lower left. It is mounted to an off-white linen background and housed behind glass in a stained wood frame.
Born in Fresno, California in 1875, Maynard Dixon had a prolific and varied artistic career. He is best known for his portrayals of the American West, most notably the desert, and the Native Americans, cowboys, and settlers who lived there. Later in his career Dixon incorporated Post-Impressionist and Cubist styles into his works, proving him an early Modernist painter. A select list of collections in which his work resides includes: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of American Art-Smithsonian, U.S. Department of the Interior Museum, Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Tucson Museum of Art, San Diego Museum of Art, and more.
