An oil painting on canvas board titled Southeaster, Provincetown by American artist Bruce McKain (1900-1990). Portrayed with loose gestural brushstrokes and areas of impasto, this work features a seacoast with ships visible in the distance. Signed to the lower right, the painting is presented in a wood frame with a silver-tone outer edge a white painted liner. The artist and title of the work are inscribed on a label to the verso.

Born on a farm in southern Indiana, Bruce McKain studied at Indiana University and graduated from the John Herron Institute in Indianapolis. He continued his studies with Charles Hawthorne and Henry Hensche in Provincetown, where he served as a Trustee and Director of the Provincetown Art Association. The artist exhibited his work at the American Federation of Arts Traveling Shows, the Cape Cod Art Association, the New York World’s Fair, the Hoosier Salons, and the Sarasota Art Association, among other venues. Among his awards are the 1st prize at the Cape Cod Art Association, the Richard Mitton Memorial Award, and the Smith-Alsop prize, to name a few. McKain’s work has been collected by the Worcester Art Museum, the Springfield Art Museum, and the Chrysler Art Museum, among other institutions and numerous private collections.
