Adolf Wislizenus and Guido Knauth Style Bisque Socket Head Dolls, 1900s
Item Details
A pair of early 20th century dolls by German manufacturers. This selection includes an Adolf Wislizenus Special doll with a hand-painted bisque socket head featuring feathered brows, sleep eyes with painted lashes, ruddy cheeks, and parted coral lips showcasing a row of teeth. The back of the head is marked ‘Special Germany’. Her jointed composition body appears to be more contemporary and is adorned in a pink gingham dress with a semi-antique eyelet pinafore. The Wislizenus doll factory was owned by Adolf Wislizenus until 1910 and did not produce porcelain, so the heads were supplied by others such as Simon & Halbig. Also offered is a doll with a hand-painted Guido Knauth style bisque head displaying feathered brows, paperweight eyes, and visible row of teeth. She wears a vintage blonde wig and features a kid leather body which is jointed at the shoulders and knees. A maker’s mark was not visible.
