A silver-gelatin photograph titled Peeling Paint, Rochester, New York by renowned American photographer Minor White (1908-1976), created in 1958. This abstract black and white photograph features a close shot of peeling wallpaper. The work is mounted on a white matting. It is signed in graphite on the mat underneath the lower right edge of the image and dated underneath the lower left edge. Presented under glass, the photograph is housed in a wood frame with a grey finish.

Considered one of the most influential photographers of the postwar era, Minor White was born in Minneaoplis and completed a B.S. degree in Botany at the Unviersity of Minnesota. In 1937, he moved to Portland, Oregon, where he taught photography and worked as a photographer for the Works Progress Administation. After being discharged from the military in 1945, White went to New York and studied with renowned art historian Meyer Schapiro. While in New York, he became acquainted with photographers Edward Weston, Paul Strand, and Alfred Stieglitz, all of whom had a profound influence on his work. In 1946, the artist began working under Ansel Adams as a photography instructor at the California School of Fine Arts. He and Adams founded Aperture magazine in 1952, along with Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan, and the Newhalls. For the following four years, White worked at the George Eastman House in Rochester with the Newhalls. His teaching career continued at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. White’s work has been exhibited and collected by numerous prestigious institutions including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the George Eastman House, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, among many others.
