1899 "Report of the Nicaragua Canal Commission 1897-1899"
Item Details
A hardcover edition of the Report of the Nicaragua Canal Commission, published in 1899, and including a folder of maps and diagrams in a slip case. The report was part of a US government project in the late 19th century to explore the possibility of constructing a canal through Nicaragua to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans; as it happened, of course, the United States ended up building the canal through Panama instead. The report provides detailed engineering, geological and hydrological information on what such a project would have entailed.
