An early 20th century oil painting on canvas by listed artist Daniel F. Wentworth (Connecticut/Maine/Norway; 1850 – 1934). This landscape painting depicts a wooded river bank as the sun casts a warm glow across the horizon, rendered in staccato brushwork and a vibrant palette. It is signed to the lower left, and is housed in a gold-tone gesso frame.
Wentworth was born in Norway, Maine in 1850, and was a self-taught artist, except for a short time spent studying in Munich, known for painting realistic landscapes that often included marshes, streams and cattle. He was a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts in Hartford, and exhibited with Brooklyn Art Club, the American Watercolor Society, and the Boston Art Club. His work resides in the collections of numerous prominent Connecticut institutions, including the Mattatuck Historical Society, the Wethersfield Historical Society, Wesleyan University, and Storrs College.
