An oil painting on canvas by listed artist Edwin Henry Boddington, Jr. (United Kingdom; 1836 – 1905). This painting features a sweeping view of a pastoral scene at daybreak, as cattle graze in the grassy pasture and wade into the shallow river. This work is signed to the lower left, and is housed in a gesso frame with a gilt finish and a hanging wire to the verso. A partial label from Brodie & Middleton, London is attached to the stretcher.
Edwin H. Boddington Jr. was born into the famed Victorian era Williams family of landscape painters, also known as the Barnes School. Though he learned to paint from his father, Henry Boddington (1811 – 1865), even completing some of his father’s canvases after his death, he developed his own distinct style. His work was prolifically exhibited across England, including at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street and the British Institution, and is included in the collections of the Glasgow Museum, Rotherham Museum, Reading Town Hall and the Ealing Central Library.
Condition
- painting has been relined. Professional inpainting throughout, primarily around outer edges, with a patched repair in sky area near center of composition, just above horizon. Wear to frame.
