Untitled, 1944
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated “Charchoune / X44” to lower right

An oil painting on canvas by celebrated Russian-French artist and poet Serge Charchoune (1888 – 1975), created in 1944. Featuring a Cubist composition in neutral and muted hues, this work is signed and dated to the lower right. It is presented in a gold-tone wood frame with a beige linen liner. A descriptive label from Brock & Co. is adhered to the verso.

Russian-born artist Serge Charchoune studied at the Moscow Academy of Art and later studied under the Cubist painter Henri Le Fauconnier in Paris. He was a contemporary and friend of both Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp. Although he was among the Dada and Cubist circles, he never fully associated himself with either group. The artist authored multiple books of Dadaist poetry, however he later steered away from the movement due to its political aspects. Later on, he adopted an abstract ornamental style inspired by Russian icons and Spanish-Moorish art. His work has been exhibited and collected by multiple institutions including the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Pouchkine Museum, among others. A major restropective of his work toured to multiple museums in 1971.
