Edwin Scheier (1910 – 2008) and Mary Goldsmith (1909 – 2007) were acquainted at the Big Stone Gap Federal Art Gallery in Abingdon, Virginia while Edwin was Director. After marrying in 1937, the pair traveled to Norris, Tennessee working with the Federal Art Project learning about ceramics. In 1941 the couple was invited to teach ceramics at the University of New Hampshire by David Campbell, director of the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts. During several trips to Mexico, both Edwin and Mary were inspired by both the archaeological artifacts and weavings done by the Zapotec Indians, evident in the decorative pattern used at the circumference of this large bowl. The Scheiers retired in 1960.
