A late 19th century rural genre oil painting on canvas by Edwin A (Edward) Turner (Michigan; 1854 – 1899). The painting depicts a pair of figures in a farmyard. A young woman holds a lamb near a small flock of sheep as a man enters the animals’ pen. The painting is signed to the lower left. It is presented in an antique wooden frame with ornate cast surface embellishments, gold tone finish, and a hanging wire.

Little is known about about Turner’s early life or early art education. In the 1880s, was hired to create portraits of Muskegon, Michigan socialites and businesspeople Charles H. and Julia Hackley. The couple were impressed with Turner’s work and in 1891 sent him to Paris to study under famed French realist William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825 – 1905).

Condition

- craquelure, accretion and mild discoloration across painting. Frame has been repainted with gold tone finish, with cracking throughout moulding.
