Signed to lower right
A 19th century pastoral landscape painting on canvas by well-listed American painter Patrick Vincent Berry (New York, 1852 – 1922). The painting depicts a figure on horseback herding a small group of cows along a narrow path in a forested landscape. As in many of Berry’s works, a prominent pair of trees fill much of the composition, creating shadowy contrast against the illuminated sky that frames them. The painting is signed to the lower right and presented in a gold tone frame with a hanging wire attached to the verso.
Berry studied at Fordham University (where he would later go on to teach), Troy Academy, and St. John’s College. He was best-known for his landscapes painted with dramatic, Tonalist light.Condition
